My look at the new and improved 2006 Red Sox by position. Let's get this started:
1st Base: Defensively: Better. Johnny Olerud was great and Millar Passable, but both Youkillis and J.T. Snow I expect to shine defensively. Offensively: ? Dunno here as this will be Youk's first full time season, Snow should be ok, so we'll see.
2nd Base: Defensively: Same. I'd say Cora is a great backup and Loretta is as good as Graffanino.
Offensively: Better if Loretta is healthy.
3rd Base: Defensively: Same or better. Lowell did just win a gold glove, but Meuller was always great as well.
Offensively: Huge question mark here. I've heard rumour Lowell's 2005 was bad because he was a former steroid user. Who knows, but the issue seems to be bat speed, which I don't know how much steroids would have helped there, could be he really just had a bad year, he's had some good at-bats so far in the first 3 games. He seems like a nice guy, so I hope he does well and I hope the steroid rumours I've heard are just attempts by people to explain his bad year. We'll see
Short Stop: Defensively: I'm pretty sure Kyle could have played a better short stop than Edgar Renteria did last year. Offensively: Probably less. But I don't care, I'll take decreased offense over 30 error.
Left Field: Just Manny being Manny
Center: Defense: Same abouts I'd say. I'll miss that long haired dude crashing into walls out there though. /cry
Offense: So far its looked promising. I liked Coco Crisp even when he played for the Indians so I have High hopes.
Right Field: Defense: Same as always, good old Dirt Dog Nixon. Mo Pena looks iffy as a backup, but he was aquired for his offensive potential. So maybe a decrease for the backups, though the others (Stern, Kapler, will probably move around a bit through the year)should provide defensive backup.
DH: Good old Papi
Starting Pitching: Better Better Better. A healthy shilling, Beckett, less pressure on Clement, Wells, reliable Wake, and Papelbon for a backup all make for a strong starting staff.
Bullpen: Jury's still out on this one. |
